Man of the Match v. Wolves: Martin Petrov

Chris Brunskill

Looking back at the past two matches, it seems pretty incredible and unbelievable that Martin Petrov was left out about 90% of the time when Owen Coyle was manager of Bolton this season.

Yes, he had a very poor game against Burnley to start the Championship campaign but which Bolton Wanderers player didn't? Chris Eagles deputized Petrov's left wing position for most of the year but Martin is back now and showing Bolton just why he wears the number 10.

Whether it's whipping crosses in from the wing or having a shot from distance, Martin Petrov's game is all about pushing the opposition defense and testing the goalkeeper. He is a firm believer in the "if you don't shoot, you can't score" mantra. ven though his shots often don't result directly in goals, they do often sting the goalkeeper's hands, forcing a save that will either be pushed back into play or behind from a corner.

Petrov was instrumental in Bolton's opening goal yesterday as he put a pinpoint ball into the box from Bolton's first corner kick of the day. His inswinging ball from the right corner of the field proved to be a problem for the Wolves defenders and their inability to clear allowed Benik Afobe to finish well with the outside of his foot from close range. Petrov took at least five shots of a total 17 from Bolton and forced three saves from goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

There were, of course, other candidates for the MOTM award. Mark Davies saved the point for Bolton with his brilliant late goal and had another great game in a Bolton shirt, not being the anonymous player that he has been so often this season.

Chris Eagles test the goalkeeper often and proved to be a nuisance from dead ball situations once again. He couldn't get on the score sheet yesterday but Eagles continued his blistering run of form. It was Chris Eagles' long, diagonal ball into the box that forced the short clearance that led to Davies' equalizing goal.

Still, though, for us it was Martin Petrov who takes the coveted Lion of Vienna Suite MOTM award (I wish there was such a thing).
