Marvin Sordell Says He Was Racially Abused By Millwall Fans, Clubs Open Probe

The young Bolton Wanderers striker took to Twitter following Bolton's 2-1 loss to Millwall.

We've seen some of the abuse that Marvin Sordell has had on Twitter in recent months (completely undeserved by the way). The "fans" seem to find it fun to hurl insults at a player for the club they "support" and it just doesn't make sense. While that is terrible in its own right, it is nothing compared to what the young Bolton Wanderers strikers says happened to him and a few other Trotters at Millwall's Den on Saturday as Bolton lost the match 2-1.

Sordell took to Twitter after the match (where he spent all 90 minutes on the bench):

Sordell was referring to Chung-Yong Lee, Darren Pratley, and Benik Afobe.

The club released a statement after the fact:

Marvin Sordell has made Bolton Wanderers aware that he was subject to alleged racial abuse during Saturday's game against Millwall.

We are now working with Millwall to investigate the matter and the club have informed us that they will be speaking to the police and match officials.

Both clubs remain determined that racist behaviour or language will not be tolerated.

Millwall did the same, along similar lines:

Millwall and Bolton Wanderers are investigating allegations made by Bolton player Marvin Sordell that he was subjected to racial abuse by an individual whilst warming up as a substitute during Saturday's Championship clash at The Den.

The two clubs remain determined to do everything in their power to ensure that racist behaviour will not be tolerated.

We will be speaking to the police and the match officials on this matter but no further comment will be made until this process has been completed and the investigations have been concluded.

Sordell has been a Trotter since January 31, 2012 and has represented the England U-21s multiple times as well as being a member of Team Great Britain during the Olympics. A probe will be opened by the FA in collaboration with the police. Sordell took further abuse on Twitter from Millwall fans after posting.
