Basile Camerling made his senior debut for Ligue 1 side As Nancy in 2005 but after a bad run of form and injuries his career slowly started spiralling downhill. With relatively unsuccessful loan spells to Clermont Foot and Amiens SC his contract was left to expire.
Since then he’s spent time at numerous Championship clubs including Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic (reportedly). After spending a week training with the QPR squad at Loftus Road the 26-year-old free agent featured for Charlton’s reserves, scoring one and creating another when he played in a closed-door game at West Ham United.
Speaking to the press this is what the Addicks manager Chris Powell had to say about Camerling,
"We’ve had a trialist recently and he may come back, he may not.’’
When asked about him being on trial at the Reebok Powell said,
"It was a longstanding agreement for him to go there, even though he came to us,"
"They’ve fulfilled that, which is their right and I can’t stop them but I saw him in one training session, he played for an hour for us at West Ham and done pretty well.’’
At 26 he’s still relatively young but is he worth the gamble? All will depend on whether he’s fit and has overcome his injuries. After a very quick YouTube search and judgement I’m already comparing him to David N’Gog. As we can see from his stats he’s not prolific but does appear to hold the ball up well and has got a lot to offer apart from the finishing touch. Watch the video and make your own assessment but that’s quite promising.
If a permanent deal was agreed then Camerling would probably go into Jamie Fullarton’s development squad. If so he could feature in the Lancashire Senior Cup Tie next Tuesday at Blackpool’s Squires gate training ground.
