Hughes has joined the Wanderers with a focus on the coaching aspect and will assist with the U-18's and U-21 squads.
Given his 28 appearances for Charlton Athletic last season, the decision was made to extend Hughes' playing career into a 19th season although his appearances for Bolton will be minimal, if any.
He began his long career at Oldham Athletic for whom he played 34 games before moving to Notts County.
Hughes would spend three years at County, appearing 111 times and scoring 17 goals in a stay that would include a Division Three Championship win.
Hughes' progression would continue as he moved through the lower leagues with a £500,000 move to Reading where he would spend the largest part of his career in his preferred midfield role.
For the Royals, Hughes amassed 168 appearances during four very successful years, contributing with a useful 18 goals.
After his successes spell at Reading and two years at Norwich City, Hughes signed for Leeds United an opportunity Hughes did not want to let slip by:
‘'I felt the challenge of playing for Leeds United and Dennis Wise was too good to turn down.''
At the Yorkshire giants, Hughes was played in a variety of positions and wore the white shirt of Leeds United 116 times, scoring one goal.
Hughes' playing career has since then faded out, with spells at Scunthorpe United and most recently Charlton Athletic, where combined he made 46 appearance in four years.
