Bolton U18s march on in FA Youth Cup

Clive Brunskill

The baby Bolton Wanderers squad's impressive season continues forward with a good result in the youth FA Cup. The young Trotters took on Portsmouth in the FA Youth Cup third round proper at the Reebok Stadium and walked out 2-1 winners to move into the next round. Much like the senior squad, the U18s scored very early (just five minutes after the whistle) and gave up their lead. Unlike the big boys though, the U18s won it late.

Tom Walker curled a free kick on target and the goalkeeper failed to hold the ball. Robert Holding followed the ball well though and finished from close range. Bolton's advantage was cancelled out just seven minutes later through another free kick. The ball was whipped in and one of Pompey's defenders, Webster, headed home. It was Georg Iliev that would get the winner for Bolton, though, just ten minutes from time. Iliev met a fast ball and flicked it over Portsmouth's goalkeeper from a tight angle to win it for the baby Whites.

The fourth round draw will take place on December 14 and teams like Everton, Chelsea, Leeds and Arsenal have already secured their place. Manchester United were knocked out by Burnley in a 3-4 thriller at Old Trafford.
