MOTM v Watford: Chris Eagles

Chris Eagles, goal machine!
Chris Eagles, goal machine!

There was really only one choice today. Truth is, there has been only one choice in most of Bolton's matches this season. Not that there weren't some other good performances.

Bolton Wanderers needed good performances today as well. The club were among the early favorites for promotion, but after four matches they looked more likely to be in a relegation scrap. The talent has always been there. ANd some of it was finally put on display at the Reebok.

Matt Mills opened his Bolton account, while also playing well defensively. He has looked solid, if unspectacular, all season, and he also had a second goal disallowed. With Tim Ream being dropped completely from the 18-man squad, Mills and Zat Knight may be the preferred pairing moving forward.

The other goal scorer, Kevin Davies, was throwing his weight around all day. He missed a few easy chances that would have really put Bolton in control, but also made some important clearances while back defending. His foul on the keeper was the reason Mills' second goal was called back. These sorts of uneven displays are what you are going to get from Davies at this point in his career.

Marcos Alonso also looked good on his first league start of the season. He is never going to be an outstanding defender, but he covers himself well enough, and when he pins the opponents right fullback in his own corner Bolton are really at their best.

All that said, Chris Eagles is the obvious choice. He has created or scored all of our goals this season save one, and he was critical to the build-up play in that one. It's early yet, but he seams to be finding the consistency that he so lacked last campaign. Good on, Chris. Keep it up!
