We were all pretty excited to see what youth product Joe Riley could do when he was handed the start against Sunderland last week in the FA Cup. By all accounts, he started the game quite well, or at least he wasn't incompetent. Unfortunately for him, it was to be a cameo as he was forced off the pitch by an injury in the 36th minute. You could see the disappointment all over his face.
Today, the Bolton News has reported that this injury is not a broken foot, as feared at the time. Scans have revealed that the damage is superficial, and depending on the results of pending fitness tests, he could be back in the squad for the replay against Sunderland on Tuesday.
Riley is one of the best prospects to come out of the academy recently, and with the new manager looking to build a side, now is a crucial time for him to break into the first team. He seems up for the challenge, and tweeted this earlier today.
