Ricardo Gardner in West Ham trial

Clive Brunskill

Ricardo Gardner, who spent 14 years with the Trotters and made about 350 appearances for Bolton Wanderers is having a trial at Big Sam Allardyce's West Ham United. Bibi has been trying out for the Hammers for the last week and, should he sign for them, would join the likes of former Wanderers Kevin Nolan, Matt Taylor, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Joey O'Brien, and Ricard Vaz Te in their ranks.

Bibi featured for West Ham's U21s in a reserve outing against Southampton last Friday and last 60 minutes for the Hammers in a 0-1 loss at home. The London side are looking for depth at left back as first choice defender George McCartney has been out since December with knee ligament troubles. During the January transfer window, Big Sam had reportedly tried to sign Blackburn's Martin Olsson but could not get the deal done.

Gardner was a target for West Ham back in the summer of 2011, as they were about to begin their Championship campaign that would ultimately end with promotion through winning the playoffs. Bibi had trained with Bolton earlier this year under both Owen Coyle and Dougie Freedman. On top of the very lengthy service he provided Bolton, fans will remember him fondly for opening the scoring against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

The versatile defender/midfielder played a part in Bolton's campaign last season but ultimately would see his Bolton career end with a whimper as he was sent off against Swansea City before dealing with a lengthy injury layoff.
