And so it begins.

I'm never quite sure how to digest preseason friendlies. Are they completely meaningless? No, I can't accept that. But how much can we actually take away from this result? It really doesn't mean a whole lot that we lost 2-1 to a lower division side. I think we can look at how we did it though. And we can be a little annoyed.

We can be a little annoyed because IT'S THE SAME DAMN PROBLEM WE HAVE HAD FOR ALMOST THREE YEARS!

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Alex Revell equalized shortly after halftime, open header from a relatively tame cross. Daniel Nardiello got the winner in the 87th minute. Joe Riley and Zat Knight were left in a 7-10 split from an unimpressive through ball.

We thought Dougie had taken some steps to fixing these problems last season, but maybe the talent of Craig Dawson just papered over the cracks. Tim Ream's performance as a left back gave us some food-for-thought, but beyond that it was more of the same from the back four, and the new signings wasted little time getting in on the act.

It's only a preseason friendly. Keep saying that. We need a 20-goal-a-season striker. Keep saying that. It's fiddling while Rome burns. If Bolton Wanderers keep allowing 60, 70, 80 goals a season, then they will never get promoted. In fact, they will spend most of this season, just like last season, closer to the bottom six than the top six.

And keep in mind, dear readers, I will not be standing behind most of these statements tomorrow.
