Local lad Joe Riley joined the club and worked his way up through the youth team ranks before making his first team debut at home to Stoke City in a 5-0 victory for the Whites in November 2011. Riley was awarded the Man-of-the-Match honour following the game, and was selected to start against West Bromwich Albion a week later. However after this he suffered a hamstring injury which disrupted his progress thereafter.
The following season Riley suffered further injuries to the extent that he would only make one further appearance, at home against Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup in January 2012.
Riley's 2013/14 season would suffer a similar fate when an innocuous injury in a pre-season friendly led to the announcement that he had suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate knee ligament injury which would rule him out of the majority of the season and leaving the club light on cover in the right back position.
