Transfer Gossip: Bolton to sign Romanian left-back?

Who?

Clint Hughes

An interview with Romanian footballing legend Adrian Mutu has sparked rumours that Bolton Wanderers are about to sign 20 year old Romanian defender Ștefan Popescu on a free transfer to boost manager Dougie Freedman's defensive options.

We can't claim to know much about Popescu, but what we do know is that he began his career in Italy with AS Roma in 2009, before moving to Cesena in 2011.

He would leave Italy without making a senior league appearances for either Roma or Cesena, though he made his debut for the Cesena senior team in January 2012 in a Coppa Italia away loss against Napoli, in which he scored the opening goal.

In 2012 he was signed by French giants Marseille and immediately sent to their second team, Marseille II where he made 16 appearances without scoring.

The following season he was transferred to Ajaccio where he played alongside compatriot Adrian Mutu.

Six appearances later he was again sent to the reserve leagues where he made three appearances for Ajaccio II before being released on a free transfer.
