The player has clearly done enough to impress Neil Lennon since the manager arrived, and has spent time on loan at Chester, Torquay and Oldham in the last 14 months.
Under former manager Dougie Freedman, Wilkinson made his debut for Wanderers in the 3-2 League Cup victory over local minnows Bury.
He has also made an appearances for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 side this season, following impressive performances for the Under 17 and Under 19 teams since making his bow at international level.
Bright things are expected of Wilkinson and this latest deal gives him the platform to become the best he can be.
