Player Ratings: Watford v Bolton Wanderers

How did the players do on the first day of the season?

Bolton Wanderers

Andy Lonergan - 3

The defenders in front of him hardly helped, but Lonergan should have done better on all three of the goals. His positioning for the first one was woeful, he let Vydra's shot squirm past him and he was slow of his line for the final goal. He also didn't seem to communicate with his defence.

Kevin McNaughton - 5

Remained solid through out, not a lot came from down his side and he tried to get forward when he could.

Matt Mills - 5

Won a lot of his duels and seems to be forging an understanding with McNaughton. I feel the right side of our defence is quite good, but we need to find the right partner to play alongside Mills.

Tim Ream - 4

Ream won several player of the year awards last season, sadly he didn't take that form with him into the game. He got his arse handed to him by Vydra for the goal, was constantly dragged all over  and didn't seem to gel with Mills or Moxey.

Dean Moxey - 3

Moxey was not very good at all. He looked nervous, didn't communicate with his team mates and had a real hard time dealing with Paredes and McGugan.

Jay Spearing - 4

Won a few tackles early on but he and Medo were soon blown away by Watford's brilliant midfield. His passing was also unadventurous and sometimes shoddy.

Medo - 5

Medo had a quiet game, but kept the ball moving and won it back on a few occasions.

Chung-yong Lee - 6

Lee was quite dangerous through out, very good on the ball and picking out a pass, but he has to keep that going through out the season.

Neil Danns - 4

Hustled and harried the Watford back line, but did very little with the ball.

Darren Pratley - 0

I can not think of a single reason why Pratley should play again. Completely pointless. Send him on a trip to Italy or something.

Craig Davies - 3

Tried his hardest to make something happen, despite a lack of service. But his first touch and ability to hold up the ball really let him down.

Liam Feeney - 7

After his introduction Bolton were a lot better and Feeney was easily our best and most exciting player. He had the beating of his marker on several occasions and was making things happen down the right.

Dorian Dervite - 2

A debut to forget for the summer signing. He failed to deal with a long ball forward, allowing Forestieri to kill him for pace and score and than headed over when he was unmarked. Lets hope he gets better.

Jermaine Beckford - 4

Failed to connect with a dangerous cross and hit the side netting with a shot he should have done better with, but was a lot more composed on the ball than Davies and was heavily involved in a few attacks.

Heurelho Gomes - 7

Dealt with everything that was sent his way.

Gabriel Tamas/Gabriel Angella/Joel Ekstrand - 6

Worked very well together as a back three, dominated in the air and allowed very little to get past them.

Juan Carlos Paredes - 8

Was a constant problem down the right hand side with his pace and skill and was unlucky not to score, with a great effort that hit the cross bar.

Lewis McGugan - 6

Swept Moxey aside if he was nothing when he went on a run and was generally neat and tidy through out the game, could have been involved more though.

Daniel Tozser - 9

Tozser was absolutely brilliant. He controlled the game from deep in midfield from start to finish, with his range of passing from short, quick one-twos, to long balls which exposed our defence. He won every loose ball which allowed the other midfielders to attack.

Almen Abdi - 7

Should have capitalized on the numerous shots he had, but was a constant danger running into the box from deep.

Daniel Pudil - 6

Was largely kept quiet by McNaughton and had a tough time dealing with Feeney, but got an assist for the first goal.

Matej Vydra - 6

Scored a great goal and kept dragging Ream all over the place, but didn't do too much else worth remembering.

Troy Deeney - 8

Kept the Bolton defence busy and won countless flick ons which weren't taken advantage of. Took his goal well too.

Fernando Forestieri - 6

Giani Munari - 5

Lloyd Dyer - N/A
