When Bolton Wanderers developmental squad took on Oldham Athletic in the Manchester FA Senior Cup at the County Ground in Leyland, there were some familiar names on the team sheet.
Rob Hall, who has been in and out of the first team this season, scored Bolton's opener after a good pass from Zach Clough. Clough himself also scored Wanderers' third goal after a nice run and finish in the 18-yard box. Conor Wilkinson scored the second goal from just outside the box with a strong, curling finish. It was a goal that made one think of Kevin Davies. Not the finish, which I doubt Super Kev was ever capable of, but the way Wilkinson harassed the Oldham keeper into giving up possession in a very dangerous area. The fourth goal was scored by George Iliev, who looked like he might get some games after and impressive pre-season. Iliev's penalty was saved, but he was alert enough to put home the rebound.
Other featured players whose names may be recognized included Ross Fitzsimon, Hayden White, Oscar Threlkeld, and Josh Vela. It would be nice to see some of these guys get a run out on Saturday. After all, if the established professionals are not getting it done on the pitch, why not give the young and hungry lads from the academy a try?
