Opinion: Bolton Wanderers Need Another Goal Scorer to Stay in the Chase

Bolton have enjoyed a wonderful start to the season but the hard work starts now if they want to achieve promotion.

Bolton Wanderers have been a revelation on the field this season. The speed with which they are turned from one of the worst sides in English football into a winning machine is remarkable and is a credit to everyone at the club.

But can Bolton stay right up the top of the league for the whole season? That is going to be the greater challenge. Yes so far they have shown the mental strength to come through poor form and the defensive solidarity has not looked like waning, but what if it does.

After a promising start to the season Gary Madine is once again struggling to find the back of the net. Jamie Proctor doesn’t seem to know what the net is and Keshi Anderson has struggled to get game time.

This only leaves Zach Clough in good scoring form. It’s great to see him back amongst the goals but we cannot go through a whole season relying on one man to bag the goals.

Yes they have been shared around the team to an extent. Josh Vela has added goals to his game which is great to see, the likes of David Wheater and Lawrie Wilson are chipping in. But I feel that if we are to continue the charge at the top of the league we could really do with someone else who can consistently find the back of the net.

Not every game can be won 1-0 and eventually teams who rely on that start to concede goals or start failing to grab that one goal. This is a concern. Winning so often on fine margins does leave a lot of margin for error and I can’t escape the feeling this could eventually be a problem for the team.

Maybe I will be wrong and Bolton can keep winning by fine margins all season and stay right up the top. But I can’t escape the feeling that we need someone else who is consistently amongst the goals.
