I’ve never tried to keep my love for Gary Madine secret. A powerhouse of a man who drinks turbo shandies (that's half a pint of lager and half a Smirnoff Ice IN THE SAME GLASS, for those of you that don't know) before games, he's been a source of entertainment for me since the moment he joined our club.
I thought the Gary Madine I know and love was back against Sheffield United in the cup last week, but nothing could've prepared me for what happened against Gillingham. Big Gaz was everywhere - hassling defenders, holding the ball up like a pro and even popping up with an unexpected brace; two excellent goals that he duly deserved.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Madine is harshly treated by man Wanderers fans. Although he’s our central striker, he's not a 20-goals-a-season man; we have other players that fill that role. What he is, however, is a grafter, and those are the people we need in our team if we stand any chance of gaining promotion at the first time of asking.
I’m delighted Madine is back on the scoresheet and proving he's got what it takes to be an integral part of our squad.
Viva Phil Parkinson.
