Bolton Wanderers progress to the 3rd Round of the FA Cup, beating League One rivals Sheffield United 3-2.
Phil Parkinson made one change going into the game, with the returning David Wheater replacing Derik Osede at centre half.
Despite Sheffield United having the larger share of possession in the first half, Bolton Wanderers had control of the game. Early on, Josh Vela set up Shola Ameobi, who curled a shot just wide of the post.
Bolton showed their strength from set pieces, with Wanderers' best chances coming from corners. Mark Beevers headed an effort over, before Gary Madine forced a smart save out of United’s eighteen year old keeper Aaron Ramsdale.
The resulting corner caused a moment of controversy in the game. Mark Beevers' volley was saved by Ramsdale into the path of David Wheater, whose effort was hacked off the line by defender Reece Brown. On initial viewing, it wasn't clear whether or not the ball had crossed the line. This screenshot still isn't clear, but to me it looks just over the line.

Zach Clough then curled an effort wide. At the other end of the pitch, Blades midfielder Stefan Scougall missed their best chance of the half, volleying wide from six yards out.
And Scougall's miss proved vital as Wanderers took the lead just before half time. A long throw found it's way to Gary Madine at the far post, who smartly finished past Ramsdale to put Wanderers ahead.
Just thirty seconds into the second half, Wanderers were two up. Zach Clough passed the ball to Sammy Ameobi, who curled the ball from twenty yards out beautifully past Ramsdale into the left hand side of the goal.
Sheffield United pulled one back in the 65th minute. Paul Coutts' effort took a deflection off Mark Beevers as it flew into the bottom corner.
Despite further pressure from The Blades, Wanderers restored their two goal lead. Zach Clough again involved, this time setting up Josh Vela, who went past two defenders in the box and placed the ball in the bottom right hand corner.
Within two minutes of Vela’s goal, it was 3-2. United's corner was headed in by Jack O'Connell.
Wanderers held on though to win 3-2.
The draw for the 3rd Round is Monday night at 7:10 pm. Bolton are number 49.
