In the immediate aftermath of Bolton Wanderers throwing away a 1-0 lead in Cardiff City the board released the following statement:
"Football, where I learned the truth about despair, as will you.
There's a reason why supporting this club is the worst hell on earth... Hope. Every man who has ventured here over the centuries has looked up to the light and imagined climbing the table. So easy... So simple... And like shipwrecked men turning to sea water from uncontrollable thirst, many have died imagining.
I learned here that there can be no true despair without hope. So, as I terrorise Bolton, I will feed its people hope to poison their souls. I will let them believe they can survive so that you can watch them clamouring over each other to "stay in the sun."
You can watch me torture an entire club and when you have truly understood the depth of your failure, we will fulfil Eddie Davies’ destiny... We will destroy Bolton and then, when it is done and Bolton is ashes, then you have my permission to die."
On a slightly more serious note Bolton once again give us a little hope that they might do something and then once again it is cruelly taken away at the death. I have lost count of the number of times we have conceded last minute goals this season. Admittedly club legend Stephen Dobbie has scored a few for us too, but I don’t care.
Even though it no longer matters and this season was written off months ago there is something about losing from a winning position which is still hard to take. The ability to hold onto a lead and manage a game must be one of the main things the new manager, whoever they may be, works on ahead of next season. If they do not then that will prove to be another long season for the Whites.
