Sammy Ameobi's return to Newcastle United appears to be due to an unpaid loan fee owed to the Magpies for the winger's services in the first half of the season, according to the Bolton News.
Hope of the return of Ameobi for a second spell on loan seemed bleak, as Mo Diame and Christian Atsu will miss the entire month of January due to the African Cup of Nations.
The Magpies' recent dip in form might also have Rafa Benitez searching for alternatives; the performances of Yoann Gouffran in particular have drawn criticism from the terraces of late.
However, it appears as if the major stumbling block in the Ameobi deal is finance. The winger, who has become a fan-favourite as a result of his eye catching performances and penchant for the odd 25 yard goal, will return to training with Benitez's 2nd placed Championship side this week. Until a loan fee has been paid, it appears unlikely that Wanderers will see Ameobi in a Wanderers shirt again.
Just when you thought things were looking up...
