Player Ratings: Bolton Wanderers 4-1 Walsall

That was cold, but fun

A comfortable home win for Bolton Wanderers. One that was much-needed, given our recent poor form.

On to the ratings:

Ben Alnwick - 7

Bloke near me blamed him for their goal. Alright pal, whatever. Despite that 'mistake' he was his usual calm self. One slip aside, he was very solid.

Derik Osede - 8

Playing alongside Wheater and Beevers in a back three, Derik was fantastic. Strong in the tackle and composed on the ball. He should be playing every week.

David Wheater - 7

Solid, if unspectacular performance. A welcome return to form.

Mark Beevers - 7.5

Another who had been poor by his recent standards, in the past few games. Happily this was much more like it. Won every header and his distribution was also much better.

Andrew Taylor - 7

I thought he was injured, so was very pleased to see him back in the side. What else is there really to say about the man? He's consistently consistent, and that's fine by me.

Jay Spearing - 7.5

Ran the midfield and delivered some fantastic set-pieces which led to two goals for the team. Excellent performance.

Filipe Morais - 7.5

A very impressive home debut for the former Chelsea man. Despite not having obvious pace he had the Walsall left-back on toast throughout. He also brought some real quality in his delivery which we have been missing in recent years.

Josh Vela - 6.5

Looks tired. Flitted in and out of the game, but didn't really have much impact.

Liam Trotter - 7

Gets a seven because of his wonder strike. Apart from that I don't really remember him touching the ball.

Adam Le Fondre - 6.5

We aren't really set up to play to his strengths. We haven't got the quality on-the-ball at the moment to make use of his runs. When we figure out how to involve him in our play - and not be so direct - then he'll be flying. Welcome back.

Gary Madine - 7

Scored, which is something - and had a few moments where he bothered the Walsall defence, but also had moments of lethargy and the old throwing-his-arms-up-in-the-air which really boils my piss. Had a one-on-one in the second half, and didn't have the first clue what to do. Still, we won and he scored, so more of that on Tuesday please.

Chris Long - 7.5

Took his goal really well. Really well. Also looked very keen and added some much-needed pace into our attack late on.

Viv Solomon-Otabor - n/a

Didn't have much chance to do much of anything.

Tom Thorpe - 6.5

The ex-Manchester United man continues to frustrate, but was tidy - if unambitious - in his play.

Phil Parkinson - 8

The boring, negative tactics of recent weeks were tinkered with - a fancy shmancy 3-5-2 formation gave us more going forward, which was welcome, and a thumping home win was the result. Let's do the same on Tuesday against Rochdale.

Fans - 4, then 2, then 8

The first boo was 4.03min into the game.

Then, unaware of the situation with the linesperson, more boos and slow hand-claps.

Then the Reebok was bouncing.

It's never dull, is it?
