A Letter to Big Gary Madine

Hi mate

I love Bolton Wanderers. I really do. Even though they infuriate me summat rotten, I can’t quit ‘em.

Over the years I’ve had my favourites. John McGinlay, Jamie Pollock, Alan Thompson, Simon Charlton, Kevin Davies, Mark Fish etc, all superb. I’ve also had those players that I’ve never got on with. Nicky Summerbee, Kevin Nolan, Nicky Hunt to name just three. I don’t think I’ve ever had such mixed feelings about a player as I have about Gary Madine.

As you all no doubt know, I’ve never hidden my disregard for the man’s footballing skills. I’ve been scathing in my assessment of his abilities. I’ve often claimed that he’s one of the worst strikers we’ve ever had.

I’d like to propose a truce.

We have, potentially, the hardest season in a generation ahead of us, and like it or not, Mr Madine is going to spearhead our attack. First choice or not, I want to try and put all previous failings to one side and start afresh.

His previous year in this league was a washout, I’m sure he’d agree too, but last season saw a major improvement in his form and desire. I’d like to see that continue going forward and hope that he can be a key member of a successful Wanderers squad in the Championship.

So Gary, good luck and I’ll be backing you all the way.

Lots of love
