As confirmed by The Sun journalist Alan Nixon on twitter, former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Brazil forward Julio Baptista has departed Bolton Wanderers and won’t be signing for the club.

After rumours of a deal went silent back in July, Baptista made headlines two weeks ago when he put a picture of himself on instagram from The Bolton Whites Hotel. It was later confirmed that Baptista was training with David Lee’s U23 side in the effort to gain fitness and hopefully earn a deal with Wanderers.

Baptista would make an appearance for the U23’s last Monday against Queens Park Rangers, playing the full 90 minutes as Wanderers lost 5-0. Despite impressing Phil Parkinson with his attitude, it seems he hasn’t done enough to earn a chance to train with the first team.

Instead, Wanderers turn their attention to former player Joey O’Brien, who has been training with the first team for a number of weeks. The Irish right back/defensive midfielder is set to feature in tonight’s U23 game against Bristol City at Leyland.

Phil Parkinson spoke about O’Brien in today’s press conference, stating: “He has got to dip his toe back into the water, so to speak, get out there and play.

“He has trained very well. He has had a long time out injured but he’s played at a very high level and he’s looked good since he came in."

So Baptista has gone and O’Brien looks set to become Jay Spearing’s replacement.
