Released at the end of last season by Wanderers, the most Scouse-looking man alive has been without a club ever since, to the surprise of some.
Forever being linked with a return by desperate and short-sighted Bolton supporters, Spearing served the club with relative distinction, with an enforced spell at loan on Blackburn Rovers in the middle, first joining the club on loan from Liverpool under Owen Coyle, before signing permanently the following summer. Remember the days when we could pay £1.6m for someone? Heady times.
I must say, I wonder whether he’s just training with the club to maintain his fitness. Their recent financial woes have similar echoes to our own and so for them to find the sort of dollar that it would presumably take to keep the midfielder being beyond them as much as it was to us.
Meanwhile, Wanderers continue to struggle and fans continue to pine for his return, despite him being fairly bobbins for us over the last three years.
Either way, it’s a weird one.
