It’s that time of the year again. Time for us all to get excited, dream of the impossible and a magical - or, more accurately, a severely depressing and outrageously expensive - day out at Wembley.
No Bolton Wanderers side has lifted the magical FA trophy in more than 60 years, since Nat Lofthouse led us to a famous 2-0 victory over Manchester United. But will that stop us dreaming of an unlikely glory? Well yes, of course it will, but the 3rd Round Draw is always an exciting date in the diary.
Having reached the semi-finals in 2011 (don’t go there) then the quarter finals in 2012, Bolton have only won four of their nine third round or later FA Cup matches since.
2014/15 saw us beat local rivals Wigan Athletic in the third round, then draw 0-0 at Liverpool in the fourth round only to lose the replay 2-1 at home. Then the next season saw us just about draw at non-league Eastleigh, then just about scrape past them with a 3-2 win in the replay, then lost 2-1 at home to Leeds United in the next round.
The third round draw has not been kind on Bolton in the last couple of seasons. Two seasons ago, when we were of course a League One side, we defeated Grimsby Town and Sheffield United to qualify for the third round only to land Crystal Palace, who beat us 2-1 in a replay following a 0-0 draw at Macron Stadium. While last year we were tied with Premier League side Huddersfield Town, who dismissed us with consummate ease.
So who could we get this year? Well, there’s obviously all the Premier League big boys, then non-league Barnet and Woking, who defeated Swindon Town in the second round yesterday.
So stick with us as the draw is made and we’ll bring you updates in the Comments section below.
