Soon after, Marc Iles teased fans with the following tweet:
Who knew 11 years on we'd potentially be seeing this bloke in a Bolton shirt, eh? #bwfc

The former Republic Of Ireland International is available on a free transfer after leaving Stoke City when his contract expired at the end of last season. Ireland missed the majority of last season and the entirety of the previous, due to a nasty leg break. After only making five competitive appearances for The Potters last year, he was released.
The controversial attacking midfielder made his professional debut for Manchester City against Bolton Wanderers in September 2005. Once a highly promising player, Ireland went on to play 174 times for City, before moving to Aston Villa as part of a deal to sign James Milner.
The 31 year old has a wealth of experience in the Premier League and Bolton look to make him their sixth signing of the summer.
Would Stephen Ireland be a good addition to Phil Parkinson’s squad? Let us know in the comment section.
