With the Championship season around the corner, all the LOV writers have been tasked with the yearly ritual of trying to predict how teams will fare this season.
With crazy money being exchanged, it’s looking to be a tight affair in the race to the Premier League.
So, here are my 2018/2019 Championship predictions:
Champions
I’m going to go with a fairly surprising choice in Derby County. Whilst this is Frank Lampard’s first job as a manager, his reputation and standing within the game has enabled him to make some really interesting signings. His two loanees, Mason Mount from Chelsea and Harry Wilson from Liverpool, turned down several other options to play for Lampard at Derby. Add those to an already impressive squad that can cope with the potential loss of Matej Vydra & I think Derby have enough to win the league.
Runners up
West Bromwich Albion. It was clear to see how much the players wanted to play for Darren Moore at the end of last season, so much so that he was appointed as manager on a permanent basis. West Brom have managed to keep hold of the majority of their squad from last season, so should be capable of returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Play-Offs
You’d expect the other relegated teams, Stoke City and Swansea City, to be fighting for a place in the top six. I’d also say the teams that were in there last season - Middlesbrough and Aston Villa, should be there or there abouts. Forest has strengthened their side, spending well over £20 million, so I think they’ll be disappointed not to be in or around the top six.
Relegated
I’m not going to say Bolton, but I’m sure we’ll probably be lingering above the drop zone this season. I’m going with Rotherham, Queens Park Rangers & Hull City. Probably going to be horrendously wrong.
Where Will Bolton Wanderers Finish?
I’ll take anything 21st and above. Mid table would be fantastic.
League Top Scorer
Britt Assombalonga, Matej Vydra or Benik Afobe. There’s always a surprise candidate who has one unreal season, just look at Leon Clarke for Sheffield United last season.
Mad Random Event Prediction
Some high profile player looking for one last pay day will join a side in The Championship with great fanfare. only to be a very expensive flop.
