Bolton Wanderers have been linked with the signing of Everton’s versatile defender Matthew Pennington, according to this article coming out of Leeds, where he spent last season on loan, making 24 appearances.

Pennington, born in Warrington, has made seven appearances for Everton’s first team, scoring once, against rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby in April 2017.

Wanderers are believed to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements, with only Jack Hobbs likely to be part of the squad to face WBA on Saturday in the league opener.

That means the likes of David Wheater and Mark Beevers will likely be the starting central defensive partnership going forward which will likely be a cause for concern amongst many supporters given their performances last season. If we do sign Pennington, let’s hope he has it in his to challenge the established duo for a starting berth in central defence this coming season.
