Bolton Wanderers starlet Luca Connell’s first taste of first team international football has come to an abrupt end.
The young Irish midfielder picked up a thigh strain whilst taking part in a week long training camp with the Republic of Ireland in Portugal.
Though he wasn’t expected to feature in either of Ireland’s upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers, Connell had made a strong impression during his time with the squad.
Manager Mick McCarthy was full of praise, stating:
”He was excellent. He has a lovely personality about him.
”He stood up in training and stood out. I think everybody was impressed with him.
”He’s just after saying good-bye to all the lads and each and every one have given him a hug. Everybody took to him as a person and as a player. It’s sad for him to be going as it was a good opportunity for him.”
