A dismal season comes to a close on the pitch today as the mystery continues about who owns Bolton Wanderers and what the club’s fate will be next season.
Having not been able to complete their previous match at home to Brentford following a players’ strike, Bolton’s final game of the season at Nottingham Forest does go ahead.
This is likely to be the last Bolton match for many players, but that won’t include stalwart David Wheater. The centre-back, who made 215 league appearances for Bolton since signing in 2011, seems to be off based on his recent social media activity and isn’t included in today’s squad. Nor is his fellow centre-back Mark Beevers, who also seems to be off this summer.
This could also be the last game in charge for current manager Phil Parkinson, who gives Remi Matthews a recall with Ben Alnwick not in the squad and Jake Turner named on the bench. Harry Brockbank makes another start at right-back and PFA spokesman Andrew Taylor on the left with the worrying looking centre-back partnership of Jack Hobbs and Jonathan Grounds. It’s great to see Joe Pritchard get a start alongside Callum Connolly and Player of the Year Gary O’Neil. Craig Noone and Will Buckley start with Josh Magennis.
There’s plenty of youth on the Wanderers bench in the form of 18-year-old forward Ronan Darcy, alongside Chiori Johnson and Jack Earing. Hopefully they all get on ahead of Clayton Donaldson.
Forest name a much stronger side with plenty of wide threat in wingers Joe Lolley and £13 million man Joao Carvalho plus full-backs Molly Wague and Sam Byram. Lewis Grabban starts up top with Matty Cash and Ben Osborn also offering a goal threat, so you do worry for Wanderers in this one.
Here are today’s starting line-ups. You can follow all the action from Bolton’s final game in The Championship from the City Ground in the Comments section below.
