London-born Sordell joined Watford aged 14 following his release from Fulham's academy system. He would spend time out loan at Wealdstone and Tranmere Rovers before establishing himself at Watford from 2010 onwards. He managed to fight off competition from Troy Deeney and Danny Graham before being sold to Bolton Wanderers for £3m on the final day of the 2012 transfer window.
The move did not bear fruit, initially, for either party, with Sordell only making three appearances, without scoring, before the club suffered relegation in May 2012. He would begin the following season back in the Championship amongst accusations of homesickness and a perceived lack of commitment. He scored his first goal for the club in a home 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, going on to score a further four before the end of the season.
Sordell is a regular for England U21s, making 14 appearances and scoring three times. He was also selected for the Great Britain Olympic side in 2012, making his debut in a friendly against Brazil prior to the tournament.
