The first game of the Dougie Freedman era brought about several changes to the side, as discussed by Chris Manning below.

1) THE NEW FORMATION

We were forewarned that Dougie Freedman was a keen exponent of the 4-2-3-1 formation which is terribly en vogue these days, however, I think that pre-knowledge was still perhaps not enough to ready the Reebok crowd for what it meant in reality. Keith Andrews and Mark Davies were held back as the ‘2’ in front of the defence, in a surprising move – Andrews was to drop back and become a fifth centre back whenever Cardiff attacked, whilst Mark Davies was employed to bring the ball out of defence to prompt attacks.

The ‘3’ in front were more flexible. Lee, Eagles and Pratley interchanged throughout the game and brought a variety to our attacking line-up seldom seen under Coyle. The surprise was that Pratley was chosen to play that forward role whereas most beforehand predicted Mark Davies would be the man for the job with Pratley providing a little more physicality in front of the defence considering our recent trend for conceding from set-pieces.

The ‘1’ up front was an issue, for me. Whilst I love Kevin Davies more than certain members of my own family, I do not think that the Kevin Davies of 2012 is the ideal man to plough a lone furrow – we need someone nippier, someone able to run into the channels and spread the defence allowing the onrushing ‘3’ to fill the gaps and take advantage. Whilst as always he worked manfully and gave his all, which is never in question, I believe that this formation will ultimately be better served with someone with the attributes of Ngog.

2) SQUAD ROTATION

It’s a squad game. Bolton have been too loyal in the past to players who have long passed any real usefulness (ahem, Kevin Nolan). Dougie Freedman’s first game saw the removal of Mears, Ream, Petrov and Spearing from the line-up that faced Middlesbrough, all bold moves that had the terrace experts scratching their hands beforehand. However, the fact that we saw so many changes was predictable, indeed only on Saturday morning the manager was quoted as saying "I don’t think it’s healthy to have a squad as big as we have got".

It will, of course, take time for Dougie to learn his best starting XI, and the performances of those brought on in the second half against Cardiff will give him food for thought. It is perhaps not too outrageous to think that the game against Leicester City tomorrow (Tuesday 6th November) could bring an entirely new arrangement around the 4-2-3-1 formation.

3) THE GOALKEEPER

Adam Bogdan is 25. He’s still only just moved beyond his first year as first choice goalkeeper for Bolton Wanderers and at the moment he is struggling. It doesn’t help that the defence in front of him have been inconsistent both in terms of form and selection. However, it may also be a hindrance to know that behind the scenes he has no real competition at present because of the unfortunate knee injury suffered by Andy Lonergan. Bogdan can sometimes look nervous when coming to claim a ball, especially from set pieces, though of course this comes with experience, we all remember how flaky a young Mr Jaaskelainen looked in his early days.

One moment stands out in my mind from the game against Cardiff City, a cross came into the box and the goalkeeper elected to punch clear as opposed to catch, an action which prompted approximately 15,000 people to exclaim "BLOODY CATCH IT" in unison – having given this some thought since the end of the game I’ve come to the conclusion that criticism of the goalkeeper alone for this decision is unfair. As all Sunday league footballers know, it is impossible to be fully aware of your surroundings when you are concentrating on the ball – you rely on your teammates giving you the information, and so where that information is lacking then his decision to clear first, ask questions later, becomes reasonably logical.

That said, questions can be asked of his reactions and reflexes, not only in the Cardiff game but of late – though the talent of the player is not in question, just look at his save from the opposition goalkeeper in a 94th minute goalmouth scramble. The goalkeeper coach, Hughes, brought in at the expense of club favourite Barber has also come in for criticism since Bogdan began playing. However, I think that 18 months of coaching under a new man would be unlikely to overrule the years of coaching given under Barber.

4) IMPACT SUBSTITUTES

A manager’s impact upon a game in progress can be hard to judge. Tinkering with formations and personnel obviously can change things, but having seen his work in action I think we can be pleased to see that Dougie Freedman is a proactive manager, rather than reactive. The game was crying out for width, the 4-2-3-1 formation that we employed left us narrow, and concentrated our attacks through the centre of the pitch where Cardiff were strongest. The introduction of Petrov saw us drag the ball wider, and which in turn pulled the midfield across the pitch allowing our attacking forces to have more time on the ball to create chances for the forwards.

David Ngog was brought on to replace Kevin Davies, and his arrival saw the game stretched even further as he ran into the corners with fresh legs, and gave the Cardiff defenders another question to answer with his close control and pace. The arrival of both Ngog and Petrov showed that the manager was able to assess the play as it developed, and then he was able to formulate a change in strategy mid-match which allowed us to come back into the game and to dominate the final 30 minutes.

This again bodes well for the future, as under Coyle I often felt that his substitutions came too late in the game, and were overly reactive rather than proactive. The signs are positive that Dougie can have a real impact upon our performance to actively affect the game, hopefully with three points being the end result.

5) DAVID NGOG

Wow, what a performance! It had all the components of a Hollywood film – drama, action, romance and comedy. His arrival as a second half subsititute for Kevin Davies changed the game. He immediately was involved as Bolton began to play a more patient attacking game, spreading the play from wing to wing as we varied our attacks which to that point had been rather predictable.

Ngog became a focal point for the attack, using his natural strength to hold off the defenders and using his ability to bring others into play around him. Within ten minutes of coming on he had twice stung the palms of Marshall in the Cardiff City goal – doubling the number of shots that I have seen him have in home games in the past year alone. He soon put the ball in the net at the Reebok for the first time in his short Bolton career, though this was disallowed by the linesman – this was later proven to be a huge mistake on his part with television replays showing our man being at least a yard onside. It was an all-action performance.

Undeterred, Ngog was throwing himself into the action with great spirit, and his desire to impress the new manager was obvious. His keenness to get involved brought about a very harsh booking from the referee, the impact of which came only later in the game. Ngog was beginning to be absolutely central to everything right that Bolton did, never more so that when his deft flick to Sam Ricketts’ shot in the 74th minute gave Bolton the lead for the first time. It was a great display of skill and awareness as he diverted a shot into the bottom corner giving the goalkeeper no chance. It was a terrific finish, and his first home goal was richly deserved.

The comedic aspect of his performance came in the dying minutes, as a reckless lunge at a defender brought about the second yellow, and then the red card and he was dismissed, leaving Bolton playing a revolutionary 4-5-0 formation as we went into injury time. Whilst we can have few complaints about the second yellow, the first was a ridiculous decision from a referee whose only contribution to the game was to make us long for someone more slimline like Phil Dowd. It was a shock to me that he was even refereeing, as I’m sure I’ve seen him on television lately advertising Jacamo products, for the larger gentleman.

This childish barb aside, it was a superb performance from Ngog, and another which bodes well for the future under Freedman if the player can bring this sort of energy and desire to the next game after his suspension.

Bolton made a stirring second half comeback against top of the table Cardiff City at the Reebok on Saturday. The sponsor's official Man of the Match award went to Mark Davies, but Lion of Vienna Suite has other ideas.

Dougie Freedman made four changes from Bolton's previous match in naming the first team of his Wanderers career. Defenders Tim Ream and Tyrone Mears were dropped (Mears was not even in the squad), along with midfielders Jay Spearing and Martin Petrov. Three of the players that were recalled (Zat Knight, Matt Mills, Keith Andrews) have spent a lot of time on the pitch for Bolton this season. These were not drastic changes. The fourth change was quite drastic. Dougie brought Darren Pratley in from the cold and gave him his first start in the league this season. One had to wonder if any of these players would figure in the MOTM discussion.

I thought Darren Pratley had a decent first half. He was running nonstop, I suspect because he wanted to prove that he deserved this chance. He also was getting forward in support of his striker, something that has been lacking in the Bolton central midfield this season. He pressed the Cardiff back line pretty heavily, forcing them into a few errors. He also played two brilliant balls forward to Chung-Yong Lee, who was not able to take advantage of them.

And that kind of sums up Chungy's day. He was very involved in the match, and made some nice forward runs, but the final ball just eluded him. He also did a nice job defensively, giving Samuel Ricketts a lot of support on the right. On the negative side, Lee no longer seems to hug the touchline to give Wanderers the width that as been so critical in attack the last few seasons. He spent large portions of the match tucked inside, making things easier for the Cardiff defense.

How about Mark Davies? He won the sponsor's Man of the Match. But not the coveted Lion of Vienna Suite Grape Delight, not today. He was solid in the midfield, and his mazy forward run past multiple defenders and into the Cardiff City penalty area created the second goal. But, as has always been his problem, he disappeared for large stretches of the match, notably in the first half.

Dougie Freedman's first match in charge featured a use of substitutions the likes of which we have not seen since the Sam Allardyce era. They were decisive, they were aggressive, they were proactive, and they changed the match completely. It seems a little like cheating to give our new manager the MOTM, so let's just say he made a nice start.

And then there are the substitutes. Martin Petrov was no doubt unhappy to be dropped. He barely played under Owen Coyle this season, and when Jimmy Phillips returned him to the starting XI, he looked very good. When he came on in the second half, Bolton started to dominate, and he was a big part of it. He ran at the defense, put in a lot of pinpoint crosses, created chances for his teammates, and of course put away the penalty that ultimately proved to be the game winner.

And then there was David Ngog. Ngog partnered Kevin Davies up top for a fair part of last season, and even replaced him for a while in the single striker formations. But he ha shad a lot of problems this season, primarily with a back injury that forced him to start the season late, and has prevented him from reaching peak fitness levels. But those problems ended today.

Every time Ngog touched the ball he looked a threat to score. He won everything near him in the air. He turned and got past defenders routinely, running at them with pace and purpose when he did. He created opportunities for others. He scored a good goal which was improperly disallowed. Then he won a penalty which Petrov put away. Then he scored his own goal with a tidy little finish. Then he got sent off for a second yellow card. It was perhaps the most eventful twenty-five minutes I have ever seen a single player have.

The reviews of David Ngog have been decidedly mixed since he arrived from Liverpool. Some have always thought that the young Frenchman had the ability to dominate a match as he did today. We will have to wait until after his suspension to see if it can continue. As for now, he will have to be content with the Lion of Vienna Suite Man of the Match Award. Vote for your choice below!

It was a boring first half, and a very eventful second half, so of course the two managers had quite a bit to say...

Let's visit what Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay had to say first,

To be honest we do feel hard done by, yes. decisions change games. We were in control first half. They never had a serious attempt on our target, We scored and they had to come out and have a go for it.

Alright, this is going a bit far Malky. Yes, it's true that Bolton didn't have a serious attempt on target, but neither did Cardiff, until their fluky goal in the 40th minute

"They got a penalty out of nothing. There was incredibly minimal contact and Ngog is already diving when he is touched. The referee gives it, fair enough, but if he gives that he has to give Mark Hudson's penalty. It was unbelievable. He either gives neither or he gives both. Hudson was attempting to head the ball and Warnock's arm is around him.

"That got them back into the game and then they got the second goal and they had their tails up. We had balls across the box at the end and it was backs to the walls time for them. There was a lot of bodies in the box. But decisions change games and the referees has changed that one. I do hope the referee has a look at his decisions and the lineman, too.

Perhaps Cardiff City were a bit unlucky, but over all they didn't do much to distinguish themselves from Bolton, and the game honestly could've gone either way."

Dougie Freedman had somewhat of a different perspective on the match,

"I didn't think we deserved to be a goal down at half time, but we responded in the right manner and asked a lot of questions of Cardiff as soon as the second half started. Overall I thought we deserved to win that match of football.

"Our players have got to get to know that because of the demands of this league we will be making use of the whole squad. It was certainly the squad that won us this game tonight.

"Cardiff are a top team. They've spent a substantial amount of money and added some quality players.

"We passed the ball quite well in the first half without ever really hurting them. The game doesn't have to be won inside the opening half. We stuck to our game-plan and as the match wore on we grew stronger. I knew having played against Cardiff a lot, that if we could keep the tempo up in the second half we'd get chances.

"Now there's no use in us opening the champagne and celebrating thinking we're going to be okay. We've now got to respond on Monday morning in training. Hopefully the players will come in with a smile on their faces ready to go again.

"Overall, I think it was a good performance from the whole squad and coaching staff. The fans played their part, particularly in the second half, in getting behind the side. It's all about momentum both on and off the pitch and today the supporters gave us a real boost. They were vocal and it's good to send them home happy."

It's so refreshing to see a realistic take on the game. Instead of bemoaning unfair calls, he only touches on the fact that the halftime score didn't really reflect the first 45, and then emphasized his use of tactics. It's clear that Dougie actually does have a game plan, unlike Coyle, and while it's too early to tell, it seems to be effective too.

It really did look like a Bolton team of old as once again, the whites fought back and stayed strong to get a very good result at home. The Whites (as they tend to do) conceded a very soft goal for Cardiff City to open the scoring but a (shockingly) good pair of substitutions from Dougie Freedman saw Bolton win it.

Even though Bolton had their first goal (very) wrongfully disallowed, they did not let their heads go down. David Ngog drew Bolton's penalty and Martin Petrov finished as cool as you like. Ngog then got the game-winner with a long-range effort that trickled through and into the back of the net. The match had a very nervy finish but Bolton Wanderers left the Reebok Stadium with all three points.

Bolton will have to keep the good work up on Tuesday as they welcome Leicester City to the Reebok. The Foxes are currently fourth in the Championship. This was also the first time in six games that Bolton conceded less than two goals. Movin' on up in the world/table.

We won! We actually won! As exciting as this is, though, it's important not to get carried away...

First and foremost, it is important to take from this game that Bolton is still very decidedly Bolton. Dougie Freedman, whatever else he may be, is not a fairy godmother, and this is still a squad with many problems, which need to be addressed, coached, and probably changed quite a bit. It's important to remain realistic and not put too much pressure on a club which remains in a tough spot. There is still a lot of season to go, and one game does not a campaign make.

With that out of the way: what a match! It was, as the cliche goes, a game of two halves. The opening period can be summed up in one word: dull. Dougie started the team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, letting Keith Andrews and Darren Pratley lock down the midfield in back, while Chris Eagles, Chung-Yong Lee, and Mark Davies sat behind Kevin Davies in support. This did seem effective, as while Cardiff might've edged Bolton as the better side, neither team really got a grip on the game.

With the exception of a weak penalty shout for Bolton as Eagles was barged in the box, neither side put together anything meaningful until the 40th minute, when Cardiff City took the lead. It was a very Bolton goal to concede, there was confusion in the Bolton box as the concept of 'marking' broke down again, and Craig Noone sent the ball home from the edge of the box, past Adam Bogdan. While it's true, there were quite a few players in the way, even so Bogdan's reaction seemed slow.

The goal did seem to remind the Wanderers that they were actually meant to be playing football, but the half time whistle blew without further incident. As Bolton fans are used to now, the boys emerged from the tunnel a different side indeed, although against the norm, they were better than in the first half. Chung-Yong had the first convincing chance of the half, forcing David Marshall to fist the shot away. Chungy wasn't anywhere near the level he was before the injury, but it was again another decent performance from him.

This prompted a series of attacks from the Wanderers, with Andrews and Eagles both getting chances in. After Eagles' shot from 25 yards out, which got a save from Marshall, in the 52nd minute, Cardiff once again got into the match, getting a series of corners, but in perhaps the most surprising aspect of the match, the Bolton defense dealt with it competently.

This prompted Dougie to make his first substitution of his Bolton tenure, taking Pratley off for Martin Petrov, in an offensive mood, which changed the formation more to a 4-5-1. Seven minutes late, Kevin Davies came off for David Ngog, which was arguably the move of the match. Two minutes after coming on, Ngog justified the move by scoring a goal, which the officials called back for offside, though replays show it was very much onside.

The Wanderers didn't let that dampen their spirits, with Ngog putting in the best performance he has had in a very very long time. In the 69th minute, he made up for the goal that wasn't by earning Bolton a penalty. In fairness, Ngog did go down pretty softly under Kim Bo-Kyung, but nonetheless a penalty was awarded. Petrov made no mistakes when he stepped up to the spot, and sent the keeper the wrong way, bring Bolton level with their guests.

Just 5 minutes later, Ngog gave Bolton the lead, picking up a miscued Sam Ricketts' shot and putting it past Marshall. If anything, this only fueled Cardiff's fire, and it was a nervy final 15 minutes. Chungy, who was already on a yellow card, put in a clumsy tackle, which may have prompted Bolton's final substitution of the match, putting Tim Ream on for Chungy. This was a defensive substitution from Dougie, having made 2 offensive minded ones earlier in the half, and it proved to be tactically the correct decision.

Craig Noone was a menace to the Bolton defense, who did show some of their characteristic shakiness, but most importantly they did not concede. The final five minutes were what can only be described as 'squeaky bum time'. In the 90th minute, after an incredible performance as a substitute, Ngog got himself sent off for a second yellow card. A few minutes later, Bolton hearts were once again in Bolton throats, as Stephen Warnock brought Mark Hudson down in the box. Scuffle ensued, but the ref didn't award anything. Cardiff keeper Marshall took a free kick, which forced Bogdan into a save.

It's safe to say all Wanderers were relieved when the final whistle blew. This is a fantastic result for the Wanderers, and a good start for Dougie Freedman's Bolton. There's no doubt that Bolton still has a lot to work on, but if they can show the spirit and tenacity they did this match, then there might be hope after all.

Kevin Davies gives the ball away deep in Bolton territory. This puts Wanderers on the back foot. Cardiff win a throw which they take quickly.

The resulting cross takes a few bounces, then lands at the feet of Craig Noone. Zat Knight tries to close him down but can't get there in time.

Bogdan may have been a little slow going down, but there were a few players between him and the shot.

Overall, Bolton had some good spells of possession and several counter attacks that had promise. Unfortunately, they could never find the final ball. Chung-Yong Lee was a particular offender, putting in some very poor crosses after being released down the right by Pratley (twice) as well as Mark Davies.

Dougie Freedman's first match has Bolton Wanderers showing a lot of the same problems that have plagued them for the past eighteen months.

We have to give him time, of course. But there needs to be a response after halftime!

High-flying Cardiff are top of the table and scoring goals at a prodigious rate (While not conceding too many). New boss Dougie Freedman has had a week with Wanderers to plug the leaks in their sinking defense. His shipbuilding skills will be severely tested today. His first squad is above, what do you think?
