All in all, it was a drab and boring affair between Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United at Elland Road. A disjointed and disconnected Bolton Wanderers attack did no favors for a defense that was, on the whole, very good on the day. Leeds' goal came from the penalty spot as Tyrone Mears conceded the clubs' 8th penalty kick of the season.

The incident came after Bolton half-cleared the ball on a Leeds attack. Becchio squared the ball for forward Ross McCormack and the Scottish attacker turned away from the goal in order to get a better angle. Mears, rushing in from behind, went sliding into McCormack and taking his left foot out. There were really no two ways about it as it was a clear-cut penalty call.

Luciano Becchio stepped up to the spot to take it and sent Adam Bogdan the wrong way. The goal was Becchio's 15th league goal of the season and 18th in all competitions (I'm really not sure why the video commentator says it's 19).

On the back of an excellent display against Birmingham, I admittedly got my hopes up for Bolton. But leave it to Bolton to follow up a nice 3 points with a dreadful loss to start the New Year. There were no changes from the side that launched a comeback at the Reebok, but all offensive know-how seemed to have left those players, as they were restricted to just 3 shots on target the entire 90 minutes.

The quiet start from both sides set the tone for the rest of the half. Defenses were kept tight and decent chances were at a minimum. Rudolph Austin had the first shot of note 12 minutes into the match, but luckily a deflection pushed his 35 yard shot wide. About 8 minutes later Kevin Davies picked up a pass from Darren Pratley, and then sent the ball on to Chris Eagles, who would've scored on a different day.

28 minutes in, Jay Spearing got so bored with the match, that he put in a crunching tackle on Austin, and very nearly injured himself. That was certainly the most exciting incident of the half. About 10 minutes later Bolton had another chance, again from Eagles. He sent a searing shot in from 30 yards out, but Paddy Kenny skillfully managed to palm the ball away. The whistle came as a welcome break from an incredibly dull half.

Unsurprisingly, neither side made any changes at half time, and the match resumed with the deadlock it had before the half. Apart from a decent chance from Marcos Alonso, where his shot went over the crossbar, the first 20 minutes of the second half passed largely without event. In the 65th minute, Tyrone Mears went into a rash tackle on Ross McCormack, conceding Bolton's 8th penalty of the season. Prolific scorer Luciano Becchio stepped up to the spot, and deftly converted the penalty, giving the home side the lead.

Dougie Freedman attempted to give the Wanderers an edge changing the side to a 4-4-2, bringing Benik Afobe and David Ngog shortly after conceding. It was largely ineffective though and the match went on to finish 1-0. There were certainly positives from this match. With the exception of the conceded penalty, it was a very good defensive display from Bolton Wanderers, something we haven't been able to say for a long time. In spite of that, in general it was just not good enough from the Trotters.

It's been a busy spell for Bolton with 3 matches in the past week, and perhaps fatigue had something to do with the performance today. Whatever it was, Dougie has until Saturday to try to identify the problem and rectify it, because I cannot listen to another 90 minutes that boring.

Kevin Davies has scored against Leeds United in two of the three times that they have met. Super Kev has three goals in that stretch with two of those coming from when the two sides met earlier this season. Leeds will be have Luciano Becchio back in the side. He is the third-highest scorer in the Championship with 14 goals thus far this season.

It's a New Years Day clash at Elland Road and the stakes are high as we get deep into the second half of the Championship season. Both of these clubs have European adventures in their not-so-distant past, but now they are fighting to get back into the promotion battle.

These two sides shared the points in early October, a result that bought Owen Coyle some time, but not much. Bolton dominated the first half on that occasion, yet they could not tale advantage and a late Kevin Davies brace was needed to secure a result. Dougie Freedman has since replaced Coyle, yet the Trotters continue to have many of the same problems.

Let's start with the logistics. This will be the 26th match of the season for each club. Leeds have 35 points and a goal difference of -5. They currently sit ninth in the table, but if Bolton win, they will go above the Yorkshire club. The Trotters have 32 points, but a goal difference of zero. They have scored 39 goals and conceded 39 goals. Leeds have scored 37 but allowed a whopping 42 goals. As we have written for most of the matches this season, there will be goals.

Leeds have some injury troubles, particularly on their front line, and our old friend El-Hadji Diouf could once again make an appearance. Bolton have injury problems of their own, but that is not exactly man-bites-dog type of news. As we all know, Stu Holden, Mark Davies, Josh Vela, David Wheater, and Matt Mills are unavailable.

David Ngog missed Bolton's win against Birmingham City with an ankle problem. Fellow striker Benik Afobe only managed to play a couple minutes Saturday because of a hamstring issue. Both will be limited to a brief cameo if they manage to play at all. Keith Andrews has an achilles problem, but he has managed to play through it thus far.

Bolton played well in the win against Birmingham, and under normal circumstances Freedman might go with the same starting XI. However, this is the holiday period, and the Wanderers will be playing their fourth match in ten days. I think Dougie would like to give both Jay Spearing and Keith Andrews a game off, but at the moment we don't have anyone else to take their places. Chris Eagles should have been dropped weeks ago for his poor form, but he could also probably use a rest. I am not sure what Dougie will do, he is still rather unpredictable in his team choices, but we could see some changes.

One area I would rather not see change is the back line. We have tried several different combinations this season, and none have really worked. That said, I like the Tyrone Mears-Marcos Alonso pairing at fullback. Zat Knight and Tim Ream make everyone nervous, but Sam Ricketts has been poor in his last few games, and Ream may have had his best match since he move dot England against Birmingham.

We would all like to think that the win Saturday was something to build on, and the start of a good run, but we have been fooled so many times over the last 18 months. A victory against Leeds would finally see consecutive wins, and really start the year off on a good note.

Happy New Year Everybody!
