Bolton's 2-1 loss at Watford over the weekend left fans scared of looking down. The loss coupled with other results around the league saw the Trotters sitting in a very disheartening 20th place in the table and three points above the drop zone. The players aren't oblivious to the precarious position and neither is the manager.

Kevin Davies made an appearance on the Goals on Sunday couch and discussed the feelings around the club at the moment:

"It's difficult. We were expecting to be at the top end and it's been a difficult couple of years for us as a club.

"There's been a lot of changes. I didn't expect us to go down from the Premier League, I thought we'd be okay, and it's difficult to take.

"We've got a fantastic squad and we've missed key players - Stuart Holden, Lee Chung-Young and David Wheater - but we hold no excuses. We've got a good enough squad and we shouldn't be where we are - but we are.

"It [relegation] has not been mentioned, but it's frightening to look after the result against Watford and see how close we are down there. It's quite scary.

"But we'll stick together, will keep working hard on the training ground and everything is in place; the squad, the manager and it's a fantastic club.

"We've just not managed to put anything together this year; no back-to-back wins and it's been very inconsistent really."

Manager Dougie Freedman was well aware of where Bolton Wanderers sit too, speaking on BBC Radio Manchester:

"We're in a difficult moment where we feel everything is going against us. We'll regroup, we stand together and we'll springboard up, no problem."

Both the manager and captain put the issue down to a lack of consistency and killer instinct. It's not necessarily that Bolton have been playing poorly, it's that they haven't done well enough to close it matches out.

Dougie said:

"I don't think that way and anyone who wants to help the club shouldn't think that way either.

"I'm more concerned about us winning games of football. We're not far away from these teams.

"We just need that little bit of luck. I've been here 1,000 times as a player and a manager. We've got the qualities in the squad to springboard us up the league.

While Super Kev added that the quality of the squad should show through:

"It's a different style of play for us, but we've got a fantastic squad.

"It's a little bit different, but he's been there three months now and we all know what's required and we all know our roles as players.

"There's competition right throughout the squad for places, so there's no excuses. We're playing well, just not doing enough to win games, which is frustrating.

"Yesterday's game was typical of our season really. We dominated for large parts, but we let them back in with the goal we conceded.

"It's just been one of those seasons that's been really frustrating. When you get a positive result you think you're going to go on and have a fantastic run, but it's just not happened for us."

Onwards and upwards, boys.

For the second week in a row, our man of the match (in losing efforts) was Josh Vela. Bolton Wanderers seem to have a fairly special player on their hands. At 19 years old, Josh Vela was handed his first league start ever and he made good use of it. Vela once again looked very comfortable on the ball and his ability to read the game is making the young midfielder a real asset for Bolton Wanderers. Couple that with Vela's tenacity and his willingness to go into a tackle, and he is quickly positioning himself to be an important member of Bolton's setup for years to come.

Jay Spearing was in good form for Bolton as well and broke up a number of Watford attacks, as he will tend to do. He also came close to scoring for Bolton, testing Manuel Almunia from a full 30 yards out and forcing the goalkeeper into a good, low stop.

Marcos Alonso deserves plaudits as well. Of Watford's many forays into Bolton's half, very few were down the left flank. As a defender, Marcos Alonso has been nothing short of fantastic the last few weeks, as was evidenced against crystal Palace, Everton, and, now, Watford. Where Alonso really adds a bonus for the Trotters is in his ability to go forward and he again caused trouble for the Hornets' defense yesterday.

Finally, Marvin Sordell deserves special mention. Occasionally players are nervous when returning to grounds that they used to call home, but not Sordell. His penalty for Bolton's goal was once again calm and collected and he proved his worth once more as a lone striker. Sordell came very close to giving Bolton a second lead but it smacked the corner where the post meets the crossbar.

Who was your Bolton man of the match v. Watford?

Bolton Wanderers fans were fired up at the start of the match. They were really up for it at the first whistle but they would go home wondering what had happened at the last. Bolton went up early but were left reeling after a pair of Watford goals. It could have been very different at the end of the day but Watford escaped with only a little bit of paint chipped off their crossbar.

Sam Ricketts got the scoring going after he was brought down in the box by Daniel Pudil. Marvin Sordell stepped up to the spot against the fans that used to cheer him on and put the ball into the back of the net with Manuel Almunia diving the wrong way. The goal was Sordell's fifth in five appearances and third game in a row with a goal.

The lead didn't last long though as Watford came charging forward. A long ball played to Matej Vydra could have seen Tim Ream take a step forward and clear it but a bad mistake from the central defender let it run kindly to the man on loan from Udinese. Vydra took Adam Bogdan on one-on-one and did well to finish at the near post for his 19th league goal and 23rd in all competitions.

The Trotters would respond but could not finish with a goal. Marvin Sordell was very much the danger man again as Chung-Yong Lee burst in from the left and found the forward in space. Sordell hit it and the ball smacked where the post meets the crossbar.

Watford would push forward once more and it was Matej Vydra doing the work once more. With four Bolton defenders closing in on him, Vydra threaded the needle and found Almen Abdi in the box. Abdi's shot rolled through two Bolton and two Watford bodies and past a very unsighted Adam Bogdan, into the back of the net.

A trip to Vicarage Road was always going to be a big ask. Last time Bolton met Watford, Gianfranco Zola was still relatively new, but now he has turned the Hornets into a well oiled machine. And after an awkward start they displayed the passing prowess they've glided through the season with.

From the off the Trotters seemed up to the challenge. They started the game aggressively, meeting Zola's famous on-the-deck football with some passing of their own. Chris Eagles and Chung-Yong Lee both caused the Hornets problems early on, and for the first 20 minutes, Bolton looked the better side.

After that, Watford livened up, mainly due to one man: Chelsea loanee Nathaniel Chalobah. The 18 year old was at the heart of the Orn midfield, edging the hosts back into the match. It seemed like all that work was for nothing in the 33rd minute when Sam Ricketts was taken down in the area. Marvin Sordell stepped up to the spot and confidently tucked the penalty away in the top corner.

The lead would not last long however, as Matej Vydra (could it be anyone else?) restored parity 5 minutes later. Tim Ream missed a key clearance on the edge of the area, which Vydra quickly pounced on it and punished the Wanderers, making it his 23rd goal of the season. And the two teams went into halftime even at 1-1, which on the whole was a fair reflection of the half.

The second half was a different story, and Watford came out with ruthless passing, taking undeniable control of the match. After a decent chance from Jay Spearing which was saved by Manuel Almunia, it was mostly one way traffic in the direction of Adam Bogdan's goal. In the 59th minute, Tim Ream made up for his earlier mistake making a crucial block from Vydra.

In the 70th minute, the consistent Watford pressure paid off and they took the lead for the first time in the match through Almen Abdi. Somehow, Abdi's shot went through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner of the net. Dougie Freedman tried to reverse Bolton's fortunes by making a triple substitution, bringing Kevin Davies, Craig Davies, and Steve de Ridder on for Chris Eagles, Marvin Sordell, and Josh Vela, switching to a strange 4-2-4 formation.

The top heaviness of the team got Bolton back into the game, but ultimately it was not enough to salvage a result and the game finished 2-1. This brought the total number of points Bolton has lost from winning positions up to 24, twenty-four, points, an astonishing number. If this match teaches us anything, it's that Dougie's Bolton is still very much a work in progress.

Be that as it may, unless the club wants to be embroiled in another relegation battle, this needs to stop happening. Next Saturday Burnley visit the Reebok, and getting points is a must.

Hornets manager Gianfranco Zola has Watford riding high, fourth in the Championship, but old boy Marvin Sordell and Bolton will come into Vicarage Road believing they can take three points and finally get their own promotion push underway.

Fans of American football will be all atwitter this weekend with the Super Bowl, but Bolton Supporters have got the Sordell-Bowl happening on Saturday at 3 PM. Marvin Sordell is returning to Vicarage Road to face his old club for the first time since his move to Bolton just over one year ago, and he is returning on the back of a great run of form. Sordell has started three of Bolton's last five matches, and he has scored four goals in that run. He is still not quite ready to play 90 minutes twice a week, as the Championship demands, but it has been seven days since he played 84 minutes (and scored a goal) against Everton, so he should feature from the start.

Watford and Bolton have not faced each other since 2007, when Watford last spent a season in the Premier League. Given that, the history of the match-up doesn't really seem relevant. So let's look at what the clubs have done so far this season:

As you read above, Watford currently sit fourth in the Championship, four points off of automatic promotion, but a very safe-looking seven points clear of the nearest challenger to their playoff spot. They have 49 points from 29 matches. They have scored a draw-jopping 56 goals, easily tops in the division, while only conceding 39. All of this stands in contrast to Bolton Wanderers, who sit 17th in the Championship, holding 34 points from 28 matches. Wanderers have scored 40 goals while conceding 41. The form has improved under Dougie Freedman, but the Trotters still have their work cut out for them.

Watford had been on a very good run of form, winning three on the trot while outscoring their opponents by a combined tally of 9-1. That all came crashing down on Wednesday when Bristol City beat them 2-0. Bolton had their own four match unbeaten run ended by Everton last Saturday in the FA Cup, but the sheer quality of the performance masked the bitterness of the defeat.

Gianfranco Zola has proven quite adept at rotating his squad, and his forwards, who have combined for over 30 goals, should feature heavily. Unfortunately, the only thing heavy about Bolton is the injury list. New signings Medo Kamara and Steve de Ridder were always unlikely to feature, but the other players still out could force at least one new signing into duty. Craig Dawson came in from West Brom last week and is pushing Zat Knight and Tim Ream for a place in the starting XI. However, Dawson has only played five minutes of football since September, and fitness is very important to Dougie Freedman.

Keith Andrews is still battling problems with his thigh and achilles, so he won't be available. By the time Andrews is fit again he may be looking at Jay Spearing, Josh Vela, Kamara, Stu Holden, and Mark Davies all ahead of him on the depth chart. That won't be an issue against Watford though. Davies is still rehabbing his shoulder in the trainer's room, and Holden will feature in tonight's reserve match and so will not travel to Watford. That means that Spearing and Vela, the young pairing who were so effective against Everton, will link up again to try and stop Watford's goal-scoring machine.

David Wheater and Matt Mills will also be unavailable, although Wheater will join Holden in facing Manchester City's reserve side tonight.

The decision everyone who supports the Trotters will really be anxious to see at Vicarage Road involves the forward line. It is almost guaranteed that Chung-Yong Lee and Chris Eagles will start on the wings, so we just want to see which striker (or strikers) they will be whipping crosses in for. Benik Afobe has returned to Arsenal, so he is no longer in contention. Craig Davies has been limited in his opportunities so far (as a certain writer on this site predicted), and that probably won't change this weekend.

It's hard to envision a scenario where Marvin Sordell doesn't play from the start given his recent form and history with Watford (25 goals in his final season and a half). But Kevin Davies expects to start every league match, and gets grumpy when he doesn't. Not to mention David Ngog, who is probably Bolton's finest all around forward. Will Dougie go with two up top, try to match attack-oriented Watford goal-for-goal, or will he take a more conservative route, and try to take the sting out of the hornets? We will see tomorrow. Bolton's last league match ended 0-0, I wouldn't bet on that score line appearing again.

I'm sure you all have a deadline day hangover (I know I do), but the football show must go on, and it will do just that tomorrow afternoon against Watford. Having not faced the high flying Hornets since September, we went to Tom Bodell, of Vital Watford to fill us in on the intervening 5 months. Take it away Tom....

Earlier this season, you said that you wanted Watford to finish higher than they did last season (11th) to justify sacking Dyche. 29 games in, Watford are 4th in the Championship, and it seems that the vision of the Pozzo family is paying off. Are you pleased with the club's progress so far? There's still a lot of season to go, but are you eyeing the Premier League?

Tom Bodell: How can I not be happy?! I'm a pretty pessimistic-realist, but this is well beyond my wildest dreams for the season. That we could have gone second in midweek seemed almost too good to be true and in the end, proved to be exactly that!

With the sheer volume of new arrivals, chiefly from abroad and speaking a multitude of different languages and varying degrees of English, plus a new manager with new ideas and a new philosophy, it didn't seem possible that everything could click into place so effectively, so quickly. However, everything has clicked into place and to that end I think quite a few of us have been whipped up into a frenzy of enthusiasm that we could be promoted this season.

I do however think that going up this season would be too soon. This project is only in its first year and we've historically seen clubs go up too quickly and immediately falter before crashing and burning upon relegation as a result. Another season in the Championship would be for the best for us, as boring as that sounds, allowing the players on-loan to sign permanently and really and truly click to the best of their abilities before going for promotion next season.

Gino Pozzo, son of Giampaolo, has said almost exactly the same thing - this season is a freebie, next season we go for promotion.

Last time we spoke, you singled out Matej Vydra as the player who would cause Bolton the most trouble. Nearly 5 months later, it seems like he's causing pretty much everybody trouble, he has become a real force in the Championship. Is this all just natural talent or has something spurred him on?

TB: I think this is genuinely natural talent. I've never seen a better finisher in a Watford shirt and he has gone from strength-to-strength since that premonition earlier in the campaign.

The first time I saw him was against Wycombe Wanderers in the League Cup in August and playing wide left of the front three, he looked like the real deal; capable of beating players and creating danger. Now he has moved centrally in the 3-5-2 and has thoroughly benefited from doing so.

Being here with Czech team-mate Daniel Pudil and apparently loving his time in WD18 has certainly helped him hit top-form so soon.

Have Watford had any coups this transfer window? Are you happy with the business that has been done?

TB: This window was more about us moving on the players who were still hanging around or had fallen down the pecking order in our 40-odd man professional squad. Chris Iwelumo has joined Oldham Athletic on-loan ahead of his contract expiry this summer, Joe Garner has departed, whilst Dale Bennett has left for good after just a handful of games by the age of 23. Steve Beleck (on-loan from Udinese) has been loaned on to Stevenage to get game time - clearly the coaching staff see something in him that he's yet to show in games.

I reckon there could be a few more departing today - the likes of Carl Dickinson, Ross Jenkins, Piero Mingoia and Matty Whichelow - to name four, don't stand much chance of featuring and would be better served playing elsewhere.

In terms of arrivals, Fernando Forestieri has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal from Udinese - a wonderful player and a genuinely exciting talent. Pudil has stated his desire to stay whilst Vydra, Cristian Battocchio and Joel Ekstrand have all excelled and are players which fans and staff would like to see signed. Fingers crossed on that front!

One of the biggest differences between Dyche and Zola is the latter's commitment to a nice style of football, or at least that's what he would tell you. Has he followed through on this? Do you think this puts Watford on firmer ground if they do manage to get promoted?

TB: Yes, definitely. We've been in the Premier League before and tried to stay up by being tight, playing percentage football and launching the ball to a hulking centre-forward (Darius Henderson), and it didn't work out.

Looking at recent examples - Swansea City and Wigan Athletic to name but two - the top-flight favours sides which attack and play positive, passing football. We would be much better equipped for survival if were to win promotion this season or next, but hopefully next.

Finally, can I get a prediction?

TB: 2-1 to the Orns. We're playing well (bar the blip at Ashton Gate) and I think Bolton, though a decent side, will not be able to contain us.
